How do I find out if programs or universities abroad are good or not?

It’s likely that the university you choose for your international studies will have a large community of students both from the local area and all around the globe. There are many ways to find out more about study abroad programs.

Many "study abroad" programs involve a group of students and professors from one or several U.S.universities and a program director going abroad together. These programs provide a high level of support to the students.

Travel arrangements and excursions, as well as housing and meal arrangements, are often arranged by the director and are included in the program cost. This type of program may be good for someone going abroad for the first time.

Exchange programs give less support but a higher degree of cultural immersion. While arrangements for your housing, meals and course registration will usually be made by the international education office of the school you will be attending, there may be less support than in a study abroad program.

Excursions are usually not included, and you will often be one of a small number of U.S. students at the university you attend.

This gives you an excellent opportunity to meet both students from the host country and other international students and form cross-cultural friendships, but does require a more independent and adventurous spirit.

What kind of insurance coverage should I have while studying abroad?

Many international students have appropriate insurance protection. The Government programs may not sometimes cover all the insurances in a foreign country. Emergency medical evacuation is almost never covered. Even if you're traveling on business, you may have significant gaps in your coverage.

Obtaining healthcare in some parts of the world can be tricky or complicated at times. Some hospitals won't provide any treatment--or won't allow patients to be discharged--until the hospital has received a guarantee of payment. Such guarantees are commonly provided by travel insurers, in conjunction with assistance providers, but rarely by other insurers or managed care plans.

All students are required to verify international health insurance coverage as part of the education abroad application process. International Health cum Medicine Insurances plays a vital role for the students who wish to pursue the studies in foreign countries.

Additionally, students are required to have emergency medical evacuation insurance. Students will be enrolled in a medical evacuation policy provided by CISI as part of their study abroad program. Students participating on all other education abroad programs are required to purchase emergency insurance.

Many needs are not visually apparent, so the more you are able to share with your Education Abroad Advisor, the more he or she will be able to utilize available resources and knowledge to identify appropriate program options. The ISO also strongly encourages students with special needs to involve the Student Disability Access Center, doctor(s), and counselors in the planning process.
